Plumber / Pipe Fitter (NITA) – Program Overview
The Plumber / Pipe Fitter program is a competency-based vocational training course examined by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA). The program is designed to equip trainees with the practical skills, technical knowledge, and professional competencies required for the installation, maintenance, and repair of water supply, drainage, and piping systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.
The course combines theoretical instruction with extensive hands-on practical training in plumbing and pipe fitting. Trainees acquire skills in interpreting plumbing drawings and specifications, pipe cutting and joining, installation of water supply systems, waste water and drainage systems, sanitary fittings, and rainwater harvesting systems. Learners are also trained in pipe bending, threading, soldering, welding of pipes, pressure testing, fault diagnosis, and system maintenance.
The program emphasizes the correct use of plumbing tools and equipment, adherence to building codes and occupational safety standards, and the application of quality workmanship in all installations. Trainees also gain knowledge in materials estimation, site preparation, and efficient water system design to ensure functionality and sustainability.
The course is offered progressively through NITA Grade III, Grade II, and Grade I levels, enabling trainees to advance from basic plumbing skills to more complex pipe fitting techniques and supervisory responsibilities. Entrepreneurship and business management skills are integrated into the training to prepare graduates for self-employment and the successful operation of plumbing enterprises.
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates can work as plumbers, pipe fitters, maintenance technicians, water system installers, construction site plumbers, or establish and manage their own plumbing and pipe fitting businesses.
The program aims to produce competent, skilled, and safety-conscious artisans capable of meeting the growing demand for reliable water and sanitation systems in residential, commercial, and infrastructure development projects.
