Overview

Ukunda Vocational Training Center is a mixed day and boarding institution catering to individuals who have completed primary school, those who have dropped out of secondary school, and any youth eager to acquire practical skills for immediate employment or to start their own businesses. The center boasts fully equipped workshops for structural fabrication, hospitality training, and modern salon services. Our program offerings include traditional craft certificates as well as contemporary curriculum tracks. We provide training in Masonry, Garment Making, Motor Vehicle Electrical, Secretarial Studies, and Welding & Fabrication.

History

Ukunda Vocational Training Center began its journey as Ukunda Youth Polytechnic, established under national mandates for community empowerment. Initially, it focused on providing local artisans with foundational skills in trades such as carpentry and basic tailoring. With the advent of county devolution following the 2010 Constitution of Kenya, management and operational responsibilities for the center were transferred to the Kwale County Department of Education. A significant transformation took place between 2021 and 2023 when Ukunda VTC was chosen as a central institution for the "Go Blue" Skill Development Programme, supported by the European Union and the German Agency for International Cooperation. This period saw a substantial expansion of the curriculum to equip numerous local young people with specialized skills in maritime transport and logistics, hospitality and coastal tourism, maritime security, and vessel repair and maintenance. Kwale County continues to provide ongoing fee subsidies and sponsorship opportunities at the center. Furthermore, graduating students are consistently provided with industry-standard toolkits from the Governor’s office, enabling them to establish micro-enterprises immediately after completing their training.
