helpAsk about this courseCourse Overview
The Fashion and Design/Garment Making program is a competency-based vocational training course examined by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA). The program is designed to equip trainees with practical skills, technical knowledge, and professional competencies required in garment making, fashion design, and clothing production for both domestic and commercial markets.
The course combines theoretical instruction with intensive hands-on practical training in garment construction and fashion design. Trainees acquire skills in fabric selection, pattern drafting, cutting techniques, sewing machine operation and maintenance, garment assembly, finishing techniques, alterations, and repair of clothing items. Learners are also trained in designing and producing a variety of garments, including dresses, skirts, shirts, trousers, uniforms, and fashion wear.
The program emphasizes creativity, accuracy, and attention to detail in garment production, as well as proper use and maintenance of tailoring tools and equipment. Trainees are also exposed to textile knowledge, fashion trends, colour combinations, customer measurement taking, fitting procedures, and quality control in garment production. Workplace safety, hygiene, and efficient workshop management practices are also integrated into the training.
The course is offered progressively through NITA Grade III, Grade II, and Grade I levels, allowing trainees to advance from basic sewing and garment construction skills to advanced tailoring techniques, fashion design, and production management. Entrepreneurship and business management skills are incorporated to prepare graduates for self-employment and the successful operation of tailoring businesses.
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates can work as tailors, dressmakers, fashion designers, garment constructors, alteration specialists, textile shop attendants, or establish and manage their own tailoring and fashion enterprises.
The program aims to produce skilled, innovative, and self-reliant professionals capable of meeting the growing demand for quality clothing and fashion services in Kenya’s apparel and textile industry.
