Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy (NITA) – Program Overview
The Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy program is a competency-based vocational training course examined by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA). The program is designed to equip trainees with the practical skills, technical knowledge, and professional competencies required to provide quality hair and beauty services in salons, spas, beauty clinics, and related enterprises.
The course combines theoretical instruction with extensive hands-on practical training in hair care, beauty treatment, and customer service. Trainees acquire skills in hair washing, cutting, styling, braiding, weaving, relaxing, colouring, and treatment, as well as scalp and hair analysis. In Beauty Therapy, learners are trained in skincare, facial treatments, manicures, pedicures, makeup application, massage techniques, nail technology, and basic salon hygiene and safety practices.
The program also introduces trainees to the use and maintenance of salon equipment, professional ethics, client consultation, product knowledge, and current trends in the beauty industry. Emphasis is placed on creativity, personal grooming, customer satisfaction, workplace safety, and environmental health standards.
The course is offered progressively through NITA Grade III, Grade II, and Grade I levels, enabling trainees to advance from basic beauty and hairdressing techniques to more specialized and advanced salon services. Entrepreneurship and business management skills are integrated into the training to prepare graduates for self-employment and successful management of beauty-related enterprises.
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates can work as hairdressers, beauty therapists, salon attendants, makeup artists, nail technicians, spa therapists, beauty consultants, or establish and manage their own salons and beauty businesses.
The program aims to produce competent, innovative, and customer-focused professionals capable of meeting the growing demand for quality hair and beauty services in Kenya and beyond.
