Computer Operator / Information and Communication Technology (ICT) – Program Overview
The Computer Operator/Information and Communication Technology (ICT) program is a competency-based vocational training course examined by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA). The program is designed to equip trainees with fundamental and practical ICT skills required for effective use, management, and support of computer systems in modern workplaces and business environments.
The course provides comprehensive training in computer operations, office productivity applications, computer hardware and software management, operating systems, internet technologies, data management, and digital communication. Trainees develop practical skills in word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, database applications, computer maintenance, file management, email communication, online collaboration, and the safe use of information systems.
In addition, learners are introduced to computer troubleshooting, installation and configuration of software, basic networking concepts, cybersecurity awareness, and emerging digital technologies. The program emphasizes hands-on learning, enabling trainees to confidently operate and maintain computer systems while adhering to industry best practices and professional standards.
The course is offered progressively through NITA Grade III, Grade II, and Grade I levels, allowing trainees to advance their competencies from basic computer operations to more specialized ICT support functions. Entrepreneurship, communication skills, workplace ethics, and customer service are integrated into the training to prepare graduates for both employment and self-employment opportunities.
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates can work as computer operators, ICT support assistants, data entry clerks, office assistants, cyber café attendants, records management assistants, digital services providers, or establish their own ICT-related enterprises. The course also provides a strong foundation for further studies and professional development in information technology and related fields.
The program aims to produce competent, innovative, and digitally skilled graduates capable of supporting the growing demand for ICT services in government, business, education, and community development sectors.
