The Light Vehicle Mechanic/Electrician program is a competency-based vocational training course examined by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA). The program is designed to equip trainees with the practical skills, technical knowledge, and professional competencies required to diagnose, service, repair, and maintain light motor vehicles and their electrical systems.
The training combines theoretical instruction with extensive hands-on practical experience in automotive workshops. Trainees acquire skills in engine servicing and repair, transmission systems, steering and suspension systems, braking systems, fuel systems, vehicle inspection, and preventive maintenance. The course also provides specialized training in automotive electrical and electronic systems, including vehicle wiring, lighting systems, charging systems, starting systems, battery maintenance, ignition systems, sensors, and electronic diagnostic techniques.
Emphasis is placed on workplace safety, the use of modern diagnostic equipment, interpretation of technical manuals, customer service, and environmental conservation practices within the automotive industry. Learners are also introduced to entrepreneurship and business management skills to prepare them for self-employment and enterprise development.
The program is offered progressively through NITA Grade III, Grade II, and Grade I levels, enabling trainees to advance from basic automotive maintenance to more complex vehicle mechanical and electrical diagnostic tasks. Upon successful completion, graduates can pursue careers as motor vehicle mechanics, automotive electricians, garage technicians, fleet maintenance technicians, service advisors, or establish their own automotive repair and maintenance businesses.
The course aims to produce competent, innovative, and industry-ready artisans capable of meeting the growing demand for skilled automotive technicians in the transport, logistics, construction, and service sectors
