Course Overview

Masonry (NITA) – Program Overview

The Masonry program is a competency-based vocational training course examined by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA). The program is designed to equip trainees with the practical skills, technical knowledge, and professional competencies required for the construction, repair, and maintenance of residential, commercial, and industrial structures.

The course combines classroom instruction with extensive hands-on practical training in construction techniques and building technology. Trainees acquire skills in setting out building works, interpreting construction drawings, preparing construction materials, mixing concrete and mortar, laying bricks and blocks, constructing foundations, walls, columns, floors, and other structural elements. Learners are also trained in plastering, rendering, paving, tiling, and basic reinforcement works.

The program emphasizes the proper use and maintenance of construction tools and equipment, adherence to occupational safety and health standards, quality workmanship, and environmental conservation practices within the construction industry. Trainees also gain knowledge in measurements, material estimation, site organization, and teamwork to ensure efficient execution of construction projects.

The course is offered progressively through NITA Grade III, Grade II, and Grade I levels, enabling trainees to develop competencies from basic masonry skills to advanced construction techniques and site supervision responsibilities. Entrepreneurship and business management skills are integrated into the training to prepare graduates for self-employment and successful participation in the construction sector.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates can work as masons, construction artisans, building technicians, site supervisors, contractors' assistants, maintenance personnel, or establish their own construction and building enterprises.

The program aims to produce competent, skilled, and safety-conscious artisans capable of meeting the growing demand for quality construction services in Kenya's building and infrastructure development sectors.
